Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – One Arkansas State University student will spend her summer abroad after being awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Adoria Roberts, a first-year sport management major from Hot Springs, will take part in a two-month summer intensive studying Chinese language at Chung Yuan Christian University in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
“Receiving the Gilman Scholarship is an incredible honor and a meaningful step toward my goal of studying abroad. It not only provides financial support but also affirms the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing global learning opportunities,” Roberts said.
Jennifer Salo, coordinator for competitive scholarships and fellowships, said she is eager to see all Roberts gets to experience and learn during her time in Taiwan.
“I’m so proud of Adoria. This will be her first time abroad, and it is wonderful that she has received support from both A-State and the Gilman Scholarship to help make her dreams a reality. I am so happy she will get to participate in this life-changing opportunity,” Salo said.

Many students may think studying abroad is out of reach for several reasons. Roberts encourages students to put themselves out there and step outside their comfort zones.
“My biggest advice is to apply even if you feel unsure. Don’t let doubt or fear of not being ‘qualified enough’ hold you back. Take time to tell your story honestly, highlight your goals and show how the experience will shape your future. Many opportunities exist for students who are willing to try,” Roberts said. “Studying abroad is more than an academic experience; it’s a chance to grow, challenge your perspective, and become more independent. Make your own history, and don’t be afraid to take that leap into something that could change your life.”
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program awarded scholarships to 2,100 American undergraduate students nationwide. The Gilman Program received more than 12,200 applications, the highest number in the program’s 25-year history for any application cycle, with Roberts among the recipients.
This group of Gilman Scholars will represent the United States while participating in study abroad programs and internships in more than 100 countries.
