ARDOT Announces Additional Effort to Reduce Litter on Arkansas Highways

Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – In an effort to combat the persistent litter issue along Arkansas Highways, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), the Arkansas Highway Police (AHP), and the Keep Arkansas Beautiful (KAB) Office are launching an awareness and enforcement campaign focusing on compliance with Arkansas laws governing the secure transport of waste materials in vehicles beginning in July.

Combating litter is a priority for ARDOT. In addition to diminishing the natural beauty of Arkansas, litter and roadway debris create safety hazards for motorists and for the crews responsible for removing them.

Last year alone, ARDOT spent approximately $9.7 million collecting and disposing of litter from Arkansas Highways. By reducing litter, ARDOT can help keep the Natural State’s roads safer, cleaner, and more attractive for everyone.

Arkansas law prohibits individuals from littering on public property and requires vehicles transporting waste, garbage, or other materials to secure their loads to prevent debris from escaping onto roadways. Violations may result in misdemeanor charges, fines, community service, and responsibility for removing any litter or debris caused by the violation.

Because vehicles transporting waste are a significant source of Highway litter, AHP will increase enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with Arkansas laws governing the secure transport of waste materials.

The intent of this effort is not to generate revenue. Rather, the goal is to promote compliance with Arkansas litter laws and encourage responsible behavior that helps reduce litter along Arkansas Highways. Improved compliance will help keep the Natural State more natural.

Questions regarding the requirements or enforcement of Arkansas litter laws may be directed to AHP at (501) 569-2421. Individuals interested in participating in ARDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program or seeking information about other litter reduction efforts may contact the KAB Office at (501) 569-2227.
