Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – Arkansas State University has announced the establishment of the Carvell Family Endowed Scholarship, a $25,000 fund created to support and encourage first generation college students attending Arkansas State University.

The annual scholarship award will be funded through interest generated from the endowment. It is designed to support full-time, on-campus students who demonstrate financial need.

First preference will be given to first-generation college students. Eligible applicants must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA, with the scholarship open to students of any classification. Selections will be made by the A-State Scholarship Committee.

The Carvell family association with A-State began with the late Richard Carvell, who passed away recently. Carvell was an emeritus assistant professor of radio-television and longtime leader in broadcasting and education.

The Carvell family consists of over a dozen of Richard Carvell’s children (and spouses), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many of them attended Arkansas State University and together earned at least 10 degrees awarded by the university.

Richard Carvell served A-State for 37 years before retiring in 2008. He was department chair and director of broadcasting for the final 19 years of his tenure, following earlier service as station manager of KASU, the university’s public broadcasting station.

“Our family wanted to establish a scholarship to help others achieve success and to reflect our love for Arkansas State and belief in the power of education,” said Rich Carvell Jr. “This scholarship will also now honor Dad’s memory and help to ensure his passion for students will continue by helping others pursue their dreams at the university that means so much to all of us in the Carvell family.”

Additional information about this and other endowment opportunities at A-State is available through the Office of Development at 870-972-3940 or development@AState.edu.
