Jonesboro, AR – JonesboroRightNow.com – The Jonesboro city council is set to consider several resolutions regarding its public transit service, GOJO, after the Finance and Administration Council Committee unanimously approved them Tuesday.
GOJO was formerly known as Jonesboro Economical Transit (JET). It was rebranded during the 2026 State of the City Address.

The first was a resolution to purchase two paratransit vans for the service. The vans cost $156,933 each, bringing the total costs to $313,866. The purchase is supported by a Federal Transit Administration cost match that is 85% federal and 15% local.
“We actually operate eight vehicles for paratransit service every day. One of the vehicles that we are currently operating, which this will allow us to replace that, plus an additional for a spare,” director of transportation Lee Wells told committee members. “This is just us trying to get our stock back up to a useful life benchmark and be able to have those spare vehicles for rotation, keep from running so many miles on each vehicle, and allow us to do the standard services that are necessary.”
The other two resolutions would authorize the city’s grants department to apply for Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants. The city will apply for grants under two programs with the FTA: Section 5307, which is for urbanized area formula grants, and Section 5339, which is for buses and bus facilities.
In one resolution, the department is requesting $120,446 in Section 5339 funding with up to a 20% local match for capital projects.

“This is the standard formula that we use; the 5307 and 5339 funding is what we use every year,” Wells said. “That’s what this is for. But this funding [Section 5339] is what we use for our department for capital purchases in order to make these purchases of vehicles, buses, things like that, that are needed for the operation of our service.”
In the second resolution, GOJO requested $1,489,359 in Section 5307 funding for operating assistance and capital projects. Of that over $1.4 million, the department is requesting $595,744 for operating assistance and $893,615 for capital projects. The department will provide a 50% local match for operating assistance and a 20% local match on capital projects.
Wells added that Section 5307 funding encompasses GOJO’s operational budget, but includes allocation for capital projects.
“Those could be literally anything from your paper and ink pens all the way up to a vehicle, if that’s what’s needed,” he said. “These funds are the funds that we utilize for purchases of vehicles, purchases of shelters, upgrading of equipment, things like that.”
All resolutions were unanimously approved by the committee and will go before the full city council at its March 17 meeting.
