One Killed, One Injured in Highway 18 Crash in Craighead County

Craighead County, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – One person was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle collision in Craighead County last Friday.

Arkansas State Police said the crash occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. Sept. 11 at Highways 18 and 135.

The fatal crash summary said that Gregory Groves, 53, of Blytheville, was driving a 2023 Chevy Traverse northbound on Highway 135. He attempted to make a left turn, crossing into the eastbound lanes of Highway 18.

Troopers said Groves’ vehicle entered the path of an eastbound 2016 Kenworth semi-truck driven by Derick Smithson, 43, of Trumann. The Kenworth struck the Chevy in the inside lane of Highway 18.

Both drivers were injured and taken to St. Bernards and Regional One Medical Center. Groves died of his injuries.

ASP noted that it was raining and the road was wet at the time of the crash.
