COLUMBIA, MO – (Contributed) – Arkansas State women’s basketball (1-2, 0-0 SBC) fell behind late in the first quarter and was unable to close the gap, dropping a 97-75 decision to Missouri (3-0, 0-0 SEC) Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena.
Zyion Shannon led the Red Wolves with 26 points on 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) shooting, and 5-for-13 (38.4 percent) from three. D’Arrah Allen went 9-for-10 (90 percent) at the free throw line and totaled 17 points to reset her season high by 11 points. The Tigers were led by Grace Slaughter’s 23 points and 64 percent (9-for-14) shooting from the field.
A-State shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the floor, making 13 threes on 30 tries (43.3 percent) beyond the arc. Mizzou shot 56.1 percent (37-for-66) on the night, with 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from 3-point range.
The Red Wolves were out-rebounded 46-28, and Mizzou controlled the pain 52-20. A-State made 14 free throws on their 19 attempts (74 percent), and forced 24 turnovers, 10 of them as steals.
Three 3-pointers in the first quarter accounted for the majority of the Red Wolves’ score at the end of the first quarter, where the Tigers led 17-14. The Red Wolves were held scoreless in the final three minutes of the quarter, which stretched into the first three minutes of the second quarter.
A Mia Tarver trey broke the dry spell and gave A-State 17, but Mizzou had already reached 30 on their end of the court. Threes by Allen and Marlie Dickerson kept the perimeter hot but the speed of Missouri’s offense left the score at half 42-25 in favor of the home team.
Offense for both teams took off, with Shannon making four of her eight triples (50%) on the way to 17 points in the third quarter alone. The Red Wolves added 29 total points in the period, with Aniyah Ruddock making two of her own beyond the arc. Missouri’s offense kept pace, as the Tigers scored 33 to set the score heading into the final 10 minutes 54-75.
Arkansas State was outscored 22-21 in the fourth, but Allen drew seven of her free throw opportunities and made all seven.
