Warming centers will open in Jonesboro for freezing temperatures

Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – The City of Jonesboro has announced that, should temperatures turn freezing, warming shelters will open as needed to provide resources for the community.

Located in the City of Jonesboro Parks and Recreation department’s community centers, warming centers will open for daytime hours when temperatures for the day are expected to be below freezing (32 F) all day.

The Salvation Army handles the overnight shelter, opening at 4:00 p.m. on freezing days. The shelter will also serve a warm meal at 5:00 p.m. Check-out is after breakfast the following day.

“Sometimes when weather becomes extreme (possibly deadly), some churches find ways to pitch in,” said Donna Malone, director of communications for Jonesboro.

In addition to the shelters, Jonesboro’s transit system, Jonesboro Economical Transportation (JET), buses will provide free rides to and from all warming centers.

  • Allen Park Community Center, 3609 Race Street
    • Open: 3:30-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 12-5 p.m. on Sat.
  • Parker Community Center, 1506 N. Church Street
    • Open: 3:30-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 12-5 p.m. on Sat.
  • Earl Bell Community Center, 1212 S. Church Street
    • Open: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 12-5 p.m. on Sat.
  • Jonesboro Youth Community Center, 1421 W. Nettleton Avenue
    • Open: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 12-5 p.m. on Sat.

Overnight Warming Station:

  • Operated by The Salvation Army of Jonesboro (when temperatures drop to 32 F or below), 800 Cate Avenue
    • Check-in: 4-5 p.m.
    • Free Hot Meal at 5 p.m. daily
    • Check-out: Following breakfast
    • Open to anyone in the community in need at no cost

Transportation provided by JET:

  • Free rides to and from warming centers
  • Free rides to Salvation Army overnight warming station

According to Malone, this is the regular protocol, but circumstances may call for a sudden change in plans.
